Grade Levels:
2-5 (but can be adapted for pretty much every grade level)
Materials Needed:United
States map, writing instruments, postage
if sending through the U.S. Postal Service
Approximate Time: Initial
lesson 20 minutes, Letter writing session
60 minutes, Geography lesson 20 minutes,
Weekly updates 15 - 20 minutes
General Procedures:
- Kick off project with class
- Review Internet safety
rules (no use of last names or home addresses, no initiating personal
meetings, etc)
- Teacher may establish
monitored e-mail account for project
- Teach general letter writing
skills, letter structure, model sample letter
- Students select state to write to, find zip code or school e-mail
in zip
- Draft, then finalize
letters, set mailing deadline
- As responses arrive, share with class and mark on map
- Send copies of response letters to this site via feedback page instructions
- Check this website weekly for country
wide updates and statistics!
